On Saturday, April 6 th , I had the honor to participate in the 10 th annual Sista Strut Memphis 3K

Breast Cancer Walk. So, what is Sista Strut?
Sista Strut is a cause marketing campaign that heightens awareness about the issues of breast cancer, specifically in women of color, as well as provide information on community resources. Each year, walks are held in select cities across the United States benefitting local non-profit
organizations.
Studies show that African American women are more likely to get breast cancer
at a younger age and have a death rate from breast cancer higher than Caucasian women of
the same age. Awareness of these issues will help survival rates with earlier diagnoses. Sista
Strut recognizes the strength of survivors, their family and friends, heightens awareness,
promotes early detection and the search for a cure.

I heard of Sista Strut before but I never participated in any of the walks. I always recognized the cause and always told myself to register, but I never got around to doing it. The reality of what they do did not hit me until it became personal, until I became that “statistic”. Therefore, this year I needed to participate not only for me, but also for all those beautiful women, survivors and non-survivors, that Sista Strut supports and honors.
When I say it was an honor, I mean that from the bottom of my core. The love, the unity, the sisterhood, the support, the joy and the life that illuminated from Tiger Lane at Liberty Park was an experience that I will never forget. I had so much fun. I laughed (and had silent cry moments) and had so much peace in an environment that hosted over 6,000 beautiful people supporting, encouraging and loving on one another.

The Sista Strut Walk left an ever-lasting impression on me and I cannot wait to do it again next year, and every year thereafter. I am a survivor and I will continue the good fight in and with faith, knowing that all things are working for my good because I love God and HE loves me.
